What makes the garnet stand out from the extensive list of stones that are available at UNA? The fact that this stone is precious. The garnet jewelry stands out strongly: it has a mysterious evening mood and passion.
So, let’s start with the title. As you can guess, the stone was named for its resemblance to the fruit of the well-known fruit. And the first person to call it that was the medieval alchemist Albert Magnus. In fact, the Latin word granatus translates as “like grains.

In fact, garnet is a group of minerals with common chemical properties that can vary greatly in appearance.
The most common and well-known color of the pomegranate is a bright red called “pyrope,” but others can also be found among the common ones:
- Purple and purple are almandine,
- Green or golden-green is a demantoid,
- Yellowish green is grossular,
- Emerald green – uvarovite,
- Orange is spessartine,
- Black, brown-red or green – andradite.
Any of the above species has a characteristic feature. You will also see it if you look at the stone in different light-a chameleon effect. So a layman can easily confuse a demantoid with a grossular in the evening under artificial light!

Where is pomegranate mined?
- Excellent and inexpensive gem-quality almandines are mined in Karelia, Alaska, Brazil and Madagascar.
- Demantoids are in Chukotka.
- Uvarovit – in the Urals, Canada and Finland.
The pomegranate has been known to mankind for more than 3,000 years and, of course, has become the hero of many legends among the different peoples of the earth:
- The Bible calls the pomegranate “the living fire that lit the way for Noah in the darkness of the Flood.
- The pomegranate was revered in the ancient East and later in medieval Europe as a symbol of constancy and devotion. As a gift, the pomegranate symbolized respect. People believed that the owner of this gem had power over those around him.
- The ancient Mongols called the pomegranate “a drop of the dragon’s blood,” and in sacred books it is described as “the frozen fire of volcanoes.
- The ancient Persians carved images of gods and powerful rulers on pomegranates. These works are considered works of art and are kept in the best museums in the world.

I especially like the Georgian legend. In my opinion, it reflects not only the common symbols, but also the name of this amazing stone.
It went like this…. A Georgian king spent a long time looking for a worthy groom for his daughter. To determine the best, the king came up with a difficult and dangerous task. The challenger had to pick three pomegranates from a magic tree, which was guarded by evil spirits.
Of course, of the many suitors, there was one who was not afraid and did well. However, when he returned with the spoils to the king, it turned out that the king was dying. Then the young man cracked open the first fruit, and the king recovered and got back on his feet. When he broke the second one, the country ripened a bountiful harvest and saved the people from starvation. But the seeds of the third were scattered in the form of stones all over the world. And now everyone who finds the red stone will find love and prosperity.

The popularity of the pomegranate in Europe began in the 17th century. The fact is that large deposits of this mineral were discovered in the Czech Republic (then in Bohemia). It was instantly beloved by jewelers and elevated on a pedestal of high European fashion. This is how the pomegranate became known around the world. The pomegranate itself is still considered a must-have ornament for the Czech national costume.
A new wave of pomegranate popularity began in the 18th century during the era of Romanticism. At that time, stones in the form of grains, the so-called “garnet jewelry technique,” were in vogue. Now not only Czech red pomegranates were used, but practically every color known to mankind. It was at this time that masterpieces of jewelry craftsmanship appeared: earrings, rings, necklaces and brooches.

One such masterpiece belonged to Johann Goethe’s muse Ulrike von Levetzow. This set of jewelry, consisting of 500 red stones, is preserved in the Trzebenice Museum in Bohemia.
Before garnet jewelry became popular, it was worn as a ring by men during the Middle Ages. By the end of the 18th century, pomegranate had become equally sought after by both men and women.
